DigiD: what it is and how to apply

Sources checked on · Launch candidate pending human review · Translated from the Spanish original

DigiD is your digital identity for the Dutch authorities: taxes, benefits, healthcare, pension and your municipality. It is personal: nobody else should use it.

Who this is for

Anyone who already has a BSN and an address registered with a Dutch municipality.

What you need

  • A BSN.
  • An address registered with a Dutch municipality.
  • A mobile phone.

Steps

  1. Apply on the official DigiD website, with the application form.
  2. Wait for the letter with the activation code: it reaches your registered address within about three working days, according to DigiD.
  3. Activate your account with the code in the letter.
  4. Add the DigiD app to log in more securely.
  5. If someone has to help you with a procedure, use DigiD Authorisation (machtigen): that person acts with their own DigiD.

Common mistakes

  • Giving your login to someone else, even someone you trust: use authorisation.
  • Using third-party sites that claim to arrange DigiD.
  • Applying with an address where you do not receive post.

DigiD will never ask for your login details by email, phone or messaging.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone else handle things for me?

Yes, through DigiD Authorisation (machtigen). Never give them your login details.

My letter has not arrived. What should I do?

Check that your registered address is correct and follow the instructions on the official website to request a new code.

Do I need it from day one?

Not to start working, but soon: many procedures can only be done with DigiD.
